COURSE DESCRIPTION
Reprinted from www.macomb.edu:  “An introductory course in the Humanities, stressing an objective approach to the arts. It is designed to provide the student with the tools necessary to understanding various forms of artistic expression and to establish the understanding that form and content in art are products of fundamental cultural values. Painting, sculpture, architecture, and music are stressed. Related field trips are a part of the humanities program.”

GRADING and CLASS ORGANIZATION

This class is organized into three different but related components:

I.        In Lab - (N110).  The ‘lab’ experience is designed to introduce concepts at the student’s own pace.  After each section the student will be quizzed. These quizzes are designed to reinforce the material just learned.  45% of the grade is based on the student’s ‘in lab’ quiz scores.  If a quiz is not taken negative points are added to the score until the quiz is completed. (see UPLOADS)

II.      On ground - (N204). 20% of the grade is based on the student’s participation.  This includes attendance, and participation in class activities.

III.    Assignments - 35% of the grade is based on the student’s assignments.  There will be two assignments and a final exam:

Culture in the Arts project – 15 pts.
Photojournal project – 60 pts.
Final – 100 pts. (120 questions)

ATTENDANCE

Each student begins with 100 points in this portion of their grade. Each class will have quizzes or activities within the session and will count toward the attendance for that day.  If you come late, you may miss questions and related participation points.  Students are also responsible for signing in for attendance.  If you wish to make up a missed day in class, see me to schedule a quiz.

Always bring your materials (including study guides) to the ‘on ground’ sessions. During the first 5 minutes of class announcements will be given and grades will be displayed.  Papers will be checked in at this time (if a paper has not been ‘checked-in,’ I have not received it).  It is the student’s responsibility to get this information should s/he miss it, especially concerning any updates to assignments, etc.  If you have any questions about your grade, please see me.

EXTRA CREDIT

In addition, there will be opportunities for extra credit, both for class participation and the assignments. These are optional and cannot be substituted for any of the required experiences.  If you miss these opportunities, they cannot be made up.

UPLOADS, ASSIGNMENTS and CALENDAR

The calendar is a continuation of this first day handout (see next page).  It is imperative that you keep up with the virtual lectures and their related quizzes.  I will allow you to submit quizzes throughout the length of the class until the end of class the day of the final exam, however, it is your responsibility to keep up with the recommended quiz due dates. Quizzes are due on the day they are listed on the calendar.

If you do not keep to the recommended quiz schedule, then you risk falling behind and losing points in other areas such as assignments, the final exam, and in-class participation.

Also, it is your responsibility to make certain that you are able to upload quizzes without any technical problems – so make sure that you come to lab sessions and alert me in a timely manner as to any problems you are having uploading quizzes.  Only quizzes that are uploaded are considered submitted.  No quizzes will be accepted after the end of class on the day of the final.  Assignments and quizzes will not be accepted via email.

Each assignment has specific criteria, which will be clearly defined in writing. Assignments must be submitted to me in class.  If I don’t check it in, I have not received it.  Save all assignments (graded and digital copies) to resolve any potential issues with grading.  DO NOT put assignments in my mailbox or under the door – they will not be accepted.  Use your login number for confidentiality purposes.  No paper will be accepted that isn’t typed or properly formatted.  Papers will be accepted up to one week past their due date (see calendar) at no penalty, but they will not receive comments.  You may resubmit one assignment only and this resubmission is due exactly one week before the final exam during class – no exceptions (see calendar).

FINAL EXAM

Students must be present for the final exam.  If you anticipate a conflict, it must be scheduled before the day of the final and completed before the scheduled date of the final.

PLAGIARISM

All work submitted must be the student’s own work. Any works cited must be quoted and support original ideas, not be the substance. Any work that is submitted that does not conform will receive a 0 on that assignment. If the work reflects another student’s work, both will be in jeopardy. If the problem cannot be resolved between the professor and student, it will then be submitted to the humanities board.

LOGIN NUMBERS

The number you will be using this term is found in the text purchased (on a small card, on the last page). We will reference grades in class by the last four digits of that number.  This is also the same number you will use to login and upload quizzes with.  You will also be assigned a computer and remote.  It is your responsibility to know and use the correct numbers.

EXPENSES

In addition to Introduction to the Arts, which is available in the book store, you will need to have photographs developed, headphones, a floppy disk (or USB device), $4 when you attend the DIA. Those who want to utilize digital cameras please have them professionally printed as photo quality does count.

CELL PHONES & PAGERS

Pagers and cell phones should be put in silent mode in both the lab and ‘on ground’ sessions. Please do not talk on your cell phone in lab.

THIS IS A CONTRACT BETWEEN THE PROFESSOR AND STUDENT. BY STAYING IN THE CLASS YOU AGREE TO THE TERMS STATED IN THIS ‘FIRST DAY HANDOUT’ and ‘CALENDAR’

HUMN 1210 Calendar:  Fall 2006
