RELAYS

1.         In the space provided, draw the schematic view of a dual contact relay.

 

 

 

 

2.         Locate the winding leads of the relay and measure the resistance of the winding.   Record the windings resistance here:   ______________

3.         Install the pins of the winding into the breadboard so you can power up one side and ground the other to energize the relay.

4.         Measure the resistance of the dual contacts and record your reading here:  
Upper Contacts  ______________          Lower Contacts  ______________

5.         Put on your safety glasses and energize the winding.

6.         Measure the resistance of the dual contacts again and record your reading here:  
Upper Contacts  ______________             Lower Contacts  ______________

7.         De-energize the relay.

8.         Wire the dual contacts so that the center contact (the movable contact) is supplied with voltage while the open contact is in series with a load.

9.         With your safety glasses on, energize the relay.

10.       Did the load work properly?  If not, notify the instructor.

11.       De-energize the relay.

12.       Install a diode across the relay winding so that the diode is reverse biased as the relay winding is energized.

13.       Measure the resistance of the winding with an analog ohmmeter in both directions and record your readings here: 

           One direction  ______________          Other direction  ______________

14.       Why were the readings different?        ____________________________________

15.       Which direction measured the resistance of the winding?   ____________________

16.       What did the other direction measure?            ____________________________________

17.       Measure the resistance of the winding with a digital ohmmeter in both directions and record your readings here:

18.       Were the readings the same as with the analog?   ____________________________

19.       Measure the resistance of the winding with the diode tester in both directions and record your readings here:
