Required Text

Mastering the World of Psychology, custom edition and course pack. Wood, Wood, and Boyd. Pearson Education, Inc. 2008.

Web site: www.mypsychlab.com

Course Outcomes  1. To learn contemporary information about human behavior in general.
2. To provide a basic foundation for advanced psychology courses.
3. To promote critical thinking about psychological and cultural matters.

Methods Used  Classroom activities, in-class questioning, group presentation, mini-lectures, open book quizzes, and exams.

Course Requirements
  • Regular attendance and participation in class is required for success. You are responsible for homework, information, quizzes, exams, etc., during absences. Homework is due no later than the next day in my mailbox. Quizzes are due on the day required in class or in my mailbox.
  • There will be 4 exams. They will not be cumulative and will be multiple-choice. (3 @ 120= 360, 1 @180 = 540 total points)
  • There will be 4 take home quizzes, located inside the textbook. (360 T points)
  • There will be 1 group project. (100)
  • There are 4 scheduled computer lab sessions. Absence from any one will result in a loss of 40 pts.
  • You must supply 8 scantrons for the class: no scantrons, no quiz or exam. Cheating on exams will result in an E final grade.
  • Exams cannot be made up unless approved by the professor and must be completed by the next class meeting. Contact the professor immediately, prior to the next class meeting!
  • Do not wear hats in class.
  • Consistent D's and E's on exams will offset quiz scores and result in a poor final grade.
  • Frequent absences can harm your grade. Attendance is mandatory the final 2 sessions: you lose your oral project points if absent.
  • If class is canceled, an already scheduled exam will take place the next class time. All assignments are due next day. Proceed with the scheduled reading as planned. Exams are based upon the textbook, not class coverage.
  • C- may not transfer to university.
  • Cell phones must be turned off completely during class and out of sight.

Grading Your final grade is based upon the TOTAL number of accumulated points.

A = 945-1000
A- = 900-944
B+ = 860-899
B = 825-859
B- = 800-824

Tutoring

Oral Group Projects Among your group, determine how best to teach your classmates about a sociocultural issue. You are responsible for presenting the information in a way that is interesting, complete, and stimulating. You may use any tools to enhance your presentation: Q and A, video, music, overheads, charts, drawings, class exercises, role playing, etc. Use your imagination. Use what you have learned re: optimal learning.

Involve the class in the presentation: use active learning, pre and post assessment, surveys, call and response, etc., etc. You must be prepared for questions from the audience. Audience-ask questions!

Cite the sources properly. You may use books, journals, and reputable Internet sites. Do not read from your notes or the text. You may refer to notes but only as a brief reference.

IMPORTANT! You will be scored on the content and style of delivery. Creativity; naturalness of delivery (comes with practice and preparation); coverage of pertinent issues, ideas, examples, implications, causes; and current research will be considered in the evaluation scores. Clarity and thoroughness, within the time frame given, count. Organize yourselves well.

The score can range from 20-100 pts. Score:

  • 5-30 pt content: detail, coherence, substance, depth of coverage, documentation
  • 5-25 pt presentation: naturalness, eye contact, familiarity with material, timing
  • 5-25 pt audiovisuals: creativity, clarity, appearance
  • 5-20 pt interaction: involves class, provides material, provokes thinking

The group has 30 minutes to present, to include Q and A time. Be professional in manner. Use all that you have learned re: critical thinking, social discourse, and team building.
