Technical Prerequisites
A class utilizes a site accessed via the Internet. You should have the following for class:

  1. An Internet connection (Cable or DSL recommended - 56KB minimum connection, AOL is problematic)
  2. Microsoft Windows Operating System (Windows 2000, or XP - Windows ME is not recommended)
  3. A web browser (Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher recommended)
  4. An e-mail account
  5. At least 2.5 gig of storage available for SAM2003
  6. A CD drive

Course Materials Texts:
  • Discovering Computers Fundamentals Edition, Shelly Cashman Series, by Shelly, Cashman & Vermaat, Course Technology
  • Microsoft Office 2003, Introductory, Shelly Cashman Series, by Shelly, Cashman & Vermaat, Course Technology
  • SAM CD (included with the Office 2003 lab book if purchased new), Version 2.5
Supplies:
  • 3.5" High Density Disk (2-3 disks) - optional
  • Memory Stick - optional

Software Microsoft Office 2003 Professional. The Professional version includes Access; the Standard version does not include Access. The lab book and the SAM training CD cover the Office 2003 version.

Classroom Time
It is assumed you will read the assigned chapters and work through the associated course lab modules. Although the material may be summarized, the lectures will be used mainly to further demonstrate the tools and techniques to answer specific questions. This time will also be used to demonstrate lab projects.

Computer Lab You are expected to read each assignment before attempting the work.

This time may be used to further demonstrate projects that were initially demonstrated during the lecture classroom time. The remainder of the time will be available for you to work through the assigned projects using the Shelly Cashman Office 2003 lab textbook, the instructor's projects, SAM material, quizzes and other material.

You are expected to have studied the reading material for each lab period prior to the class. Even with this you may not be able to complete these projects in the assigned lab time. Plan to spend approximately 4-5 hours outside of each class session on reading, homework and laboratory assignments. Therefore, the open lab (E 102) may be used to complete unfinished lab projects. Check at the lab for available hours.

Testout A SAM Testout is available for the Applications portion of the class as well as the Discovering Computers Fundamentals concepts portion of the class. The testout can only be taken during the first 3 weeks of class.

Discovering Computer Tests

There are 12 chapters in the Discovering Computers principles textbook. You are to do one Internet research activity for each chapter. You are also to do the SAM concepts training  for each Discovering Computers chapter.  Each chapter’s activities is worth a maximum of 15 points, 5 points for the research and 10 points for the SAM training.

AOL users try this when taking Quizzes:  AOL often kicks students off due to inactivity.  Look around under Keyword type in Time Zone, then go to AOL, around the world, at the bottom of the screen, then minimize.  That’s it; it keeps track of the time and therefore it is not idle.

Preparing for the Test: Read the chapters and take notes during the lecture for each chapter.  At least 90% of the questions are taken from the reading material.  I recommend reviewing the In Brief and Key Terms sections at the end of the chapters on which you are being tested.  I also recommend that you take a series of Practice Tests for each chapter. The chapter tests are given after a lecture.  Example:  Chapter 1 test will be given after the Chapter 2 lecture.  There is one makeup opportunity which will the next session after the test is originally given.

Assignment Sheet Tasks
  1. Each assignment sheet can be gotten by going to Student Data on I Drive on the network, open the Barren folder and print, send to, or copy/paste to your disk the appropriate assignment sheet.
  2. All work listed on an assignment sheet is either automatically recorded in SAM for SAM work or is turned in paper print format. The assignment sheet will indicate how the work is to be turned in. If it is turned in print format, it must be turned in stapled in sequential order with a copy of the assignment sheet on top. The assignment sheet must have your name on it and your class information.
  3. All work must be submitted according to the instructor's instructions. No work is accepted via e-mail.
  4. All work for an assignment sheet including the projects, the SAM training and any tests are due on the listed due date before the graded test. Late work is accepted for one week only after the due date at 50% of the regular points. Make sure you note the due date on the assignment sheets.

Application Tests
Before you take the final graded test for an application (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint) you are required to do the SAM training. The final graded application test will be taken in class on the date listed on the assignment sheet.

Course Policies
There is no eating or drinking in the classroom

Cheating
You must do your own work on all tests. You may not discuss the test with other students. There will be no second chances. If caught copying, all students involved will receive a zero for that test. Cheating will result in an E grade for the course and the case will be referred to the Associate Dean's office for further action as permitted.

Attendance
There are no "excused absences."  You are expected to be in class for every class session. It is your responsibility to find out what was covered and if any special instructions were given while you were absent. Handout materials are distributed only once. If a student is absent, it is up to the student to get the materials from another student. Please get yourself a partner to get this information from in case you are absent. In most cases you can get all the material you need from I:\Barren folder on the school network.

If you are having difficulty with the material, presentation cycle, speed or any other areas of the class, you are encouraged to talk to the instructor. Arrangements can be made to obtain a student tutor. The instructor does not provide tutorial services. The instructor's primary goal is to have you complete the course with a passing grade and the self-confidence and skills necessary to use computers successfully on your job.

Students are expected to be on time for class. It is very distracting to the instructor and other students when interrupted by latecomers. If you must leave early, an explanation is appreciated.

Withdrawals
If you are going to withdraw, you must follow the proper college withdrawal procedures. You can only withdraw during the first three-quarters of the semester. No withdrawal is allowed during the last one-quarter of the semester and a letter grade will be given.

Miscellaneous
Before leaving the lab:

Close all open windows on the computer and shut down your computer
Then turn off the computer, monitor and printer
Remove all used paper from your workstation area
Make sure you have all your personal belongings, especially your disks
